quiz night’s worth the wait
The legendary Youthinc Quiz Night is now bi-annual. The next quiz night fundraiser will be held in 2013 – and it’s going to be huge. You’ll just have to wait a little longer for it this time… but stay tuned for more information. You can still register your interest with us at any time. Watch this space and in the meantime, please support our other fundraisers (like Monday’s movie night!).
YEP it’s started
Great news! 10 more Youthincers will commence work in CRG stores at the start of November. We are thrilled that the group’s induction and pre-employment training has begun and they are just about ready to start work.
The Youthinc YEP (youth employment program) offers disadvantaged, disengaged youth six months of paid work in Adelaide’s Finest Supermarkets (AFS). We owe a big thank you to CBS – Community Bridging Services (www.communitybridgingservices.org.au) – who assist us by identifying and recruiting youth for our program.
Getting young people into work is just the beginning in terms of helping them to grow and succeed. So Youthinc also provides workplace mentors and a range of personal development programs and support services. These initiatives all help to build life skills and confidence which provides a pathway to a better future. Upon completion of the Youthinc YEP work program, we work hard with CBS to place the young people in longer term work.
If you think you could help by providing work to a Youthinc graduate, please contact us.

August 2011 News Update
Youthinc… where to from here?
Since another successful Youthinc Quiz Night & Charity Auction was held, at which nearly $60,000 was raised and 800 people attended, there have been a number of changes at Youthinc.
Fred Heidt, Youthinc GM for nearly three years, resigned to pursue some of his own business and social enterprise interests. Before Fred left, Spero Chapley, CRG Managing Director and Youthinc Chairman, thanked Fred for his passion, guidance and commitment to the Youthinc mission. Fred played a significant role in the development and growth phase of Youthinc. His desire to help disadvantaged young people to change their lives through employment was obvious to all and dovetailed perfectly with Youthinc’s mission. The Youthinc Board and staff acknowledged his generous input and influence.
latest developments…
Youthinc continues on in its mission to assist disadvantaged youth! Hundreds have already been assisted by Youthinc YEP (youth employment program) and we remain 100% focussed on helping youth find their feet in the world of employment. While the Foodbiz social enterprise project at Davoren Park has been put on hold indefinitely, we are getting on our core business of employing young people in various positions throughout our CRG/AFS supermarket network.
In an exciting arrangement with CBS (Community Bridging Services – another not-for-profit organisation focused on changing people’s lives through employment and training) a new round of young people will be placed across CRG stores later in the year. Youthinc and CBS will work in partnership to train, place and support the Youthincers while on placement in CRG stores.
Spurred on by inspiring Youthincer success stories, we are as determined as ever to use work as a context to bring real change to the lives of disadvantaged young people. Ultimately, we believe that everyone should get a fair go.
You will be hearing more from Youthinc about upcoming fundraising events and other initiatives we have in the pipeline.

More Background Info on Youthinc
here’s the problem…
- In SA more than 30,000 young people aged 15-24 live in poverty
- More than 42,000 young people are not fully engaged in earning or learning
- More than 24,000 have no connection to school, work or training at all
- There are approximately 2,000 long-term unemployed youth
the human cost…
Marginalised young people are more likely to experience disparities in access to health care, education and employment and, as a consequence, experience higher rates of social and mental health problems. Young people who are disengaged from school, work, family and community are at greater risk of homelessness, substance use, mental health issues and suicide. Disengagement can lead to a vicious cycle of social disadvantage spanning generations.
the cost to the community…
The disengagement of youth has a significant impact on the broader community in increased health costs, justice and welfare expenditure, lower social cohesion and loss of economic productivity. The social impact is felt in greater intergenerational problems of low education, unemployment and poverty, decreased participation in the political process and lower levels of social capital.
here’s what we are doing about it…
Our approach is pretty simple… we use work as a context for change. We place long term unemployed and other disengaged youth into work and then we ‘go to work’ on them with a range of personal development and life skills program. Disadvantaged youth + work + life skills = a better future
why we do this
Some young people are disadvantaged by circumstances that are completely outside of their control. They don’t choose their parents; they don’t put themselves in harm’s way; they don’t choose a lot of things. Some have given up, withdrawing quietly because of a lack of self esteem and self worth, or any sense of passion or direction. Others act out of retaliation, anger and frustration. Whatever the reason, we believe that all young people are capable of doing great things and that with new information, skills and genuine support they can transcend even the toughest of life circumstances.
